Tips on Preventing Business Break-Ins
When economic times get hard, there’s an increase in crime. If you’re a small business owner, you want to make sure that your company and your employees are safe and secure at all times, so to help you with that goal, here are some tips on how to protect your business from break-ins, burglaries, and theft.
Install an Alarm System
One of the best theft deterrents is an alarm system. Sometimes just the presence of an alarm system is enough to scare off potential burglars. Include surveillance cameras with your alarm system and use them to keep an eye on both the inside and outside of your business. Employees and customers alike will be less hesitant to steal from you if they see cameras in operation.
Keep Track of Keys
Whether you use keys or key cards, be sure to always keep a log of who has them, when they were handed out, and when they were given back. If you use keys, have them marked “Do Not Duplicate”, and if any keys are stolen or lost, immediately change your locks.
Illuminate Dark Areas
Nearly all commercial burglaries occur at night when thieves expect your property to be dimly lit and unoccupied. Installing floodlights, especially around doors and windows, will reduce the burglary risk.
Install Theft Prevention Systems
Protect your doors and windows with theft prevention devices. So called burglar bars are the strongest barriers you can have over windows and doors, but make sure they can’t be unbolted from the outside. If you don’t like the look of these bars, you can use transparent security film or special glass.
Landscape for Security
Burglars like to hide whenever possible. If you have shrubs or trees around your building, make sure they’re not overgrown and keep them away from any doors or windows. Keep dumpsters, vehicles, or other equipment away from doors and windows as well.
Limit Access
High risk areas, such as money counting rooms, should always be locked and accessible only to those with a business need. Only current employees should have access to critical parts of your business, so make sure to change your locks or access codes when an employee leaves the company, even in an amicable departure.
Hire Security Personnel
The presence of security guards can be highly effective in deterring burglaries. In cases where burglaries do occur, guards are professionally trained in emergency response procedures.
Finally, make sure that you have adequate insurance coverage. Include coverage for employee theft and dishonesty as well as protection from losses due to break-ins.
